In 1997, she'd just turned 17 years old when she was approached by a Big Yellow Dog Records rep heard her. The rep began selling her music and songs to a variety of artists and record labels. The demos of Decker were sent through to L.A. Reid by Mercury Records President David Massey, who was at the time in charge for Island/Def Jam. Reid then agreed to sign Decker to a recording contract. Jessie James, her moniker for the album she debuted under that name in August 2009, was her own self-titled. Jessie James was reasonably successful and also featured Wanted a single that brushed into the Top 40 of the singles charts. However while Decker was always an artist from the country scene, her album was released and marketed with a pop audience in the back of her mind. Decker felt unhappy with two more singles released from the album, challenged against the management of the record label for more influence. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more traditional. Decker's second album announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy or Sweet American Dreams was shelved by Mercury and three singles failed in the charts of country music. Decker was released from her contract.
